Freiburg top the Bundesliga after Bayern are held

Bayern drew 2-2 at Augsburg and Dortmund drew 2-2 with Werder Bremen. Freiburg beat Schalke and go top on goal difference. Leipzig put six past Eintracht Frankfurt.

Both of the teams expected to spend the season arguing over the Bundesliga dropped points this weekend, and a third has gone past them.

Bayern were held 2-2 at Augsburg. Borussia Dortmund, who had won their first four, drew 2-2 at home with Werder Bremen and lost their perfect record in the process. Freiburg beat Schalke 2-1, and that was enough.

Freiburg now lead on thirteen points with a goal difference of plus ten. Dortmund are second on the same points with plus seven. Bayern are third on eleven, and still have the best goal difference in the division at plus twelve — which is becoming the running theme of their season. They score more than anyone and keep leaving points behind.

The heaviest win of the round went to Leipzig, who beat Eintracht Frankfurt 6-0 and climbed to fifth. Leverkusen won a strange one 4-3 away at Mainz. Hamburg took three points at Hoffenheim, Stuttgart won 2-0 at St. Pauli, Union Berlin beat Elversberg 1-0 and Köln saw off Mönchengladbach 2-1.

Five matches in, two points cover the top three and the division has already produced a 6-0 and a 4-3. Whatever this season turns out to be, it is not going to be the procession the last few have been.
